Purple Martins are native songbirds in the swallow family and unfortunately like so many other species are at risk due to destruction of habitat and other circumstances. At one time in the 80’s there were apparently only 6 breeding pairs on the west coast!
In the Gulf Islands efforts are been made to provide housing for these wonderful birds with nesting boxes located at numerous sites including Sidney Island, Newcastle Island and Tod Inlet. The nesting boxes at Tod Inlet are very cool, many of them in the shape of old travel trailers. No wonder the birds love them! Purple Martins are beginning to thrive again, a true success story.
