While there are not a huge number of mammals species on North and South Pender Island we do have our share. One can’t help notice the hundreds of deer that frequent the roadsides while we travel the roads. In the waters surrounding the islands we have the river otter and mink. What is missing in significant quantities are skunks, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits and rats although many of these have appeared within the past ten years in small numbers. Bears, cougars and wolves likely lived on these islands in the past but unfortunately (fortunately?) have long since been forced out by human development.
